Water Coming Out of Your Furnace during Summer? What It May Be
When it's air conditioning season, the last thing you think about is your furnace/air handler, but you should be monitoring these systems as well, as your air conditioning system and furnace/air handler are a team. The air conditioning system uses the blower on the furnace/air handler to help distribute air around your home. Throughout the summer months, you should take a look at your furnace/air handler to be sure you don't have any unusual problems such as water coming out from the coil, which is located on the downwind side of the blower. If you see water, it's a problem you need to take care of, as it could mean a few different things. Read on for some repair tips.
Your Coil Could Be Frozen
If your coil is frozen, a common cause is a dirty filter in your furnace's return air duct. You should be changing this filter every other month, or more often if you have pets or you have a lot of people living in your home. You can find these filters at your local hardware store, or wherever HVAC equipment is sold. Check the furnace filter by removing it and inspecting it, and change it if necessary. If you find that the filter is dirty and the coil is frozen, turn off the condensing unit outside of your home and leave it on the fan setting on your thermostat to allow it to thaw out. Once cool air is blowing again through your vents in your home, you can adjust the setting on the thermostat to the "On" position. Monitor your unit over the next few days, if you continue to have this issue, hire a professional HVAC technician to help you.
Your Condensate Drain May Be Clogged
Your condensate drain on your HVAC system may be clogged if it is not leaking as it should. When it clogs, it can cause water to come out from around the coil, rather than out of the drain itself. A clogged drain is usually caused by a dirty coil pan. You should monitor this and check your drain line at the beginning of both winter and summer when you begin to turn on these systems. Clean the drain using a vacuum with an extension hose. If you continue to have this issue, you should hire a professional to inspect and clean the coils on your system.
If you have water coming out from your furnace during the summer months, it could be caused by a few different things. Hire a professional AC repair technician to help you make the necessary repairs to your system to ensure it is working properly.
